Context

Demant, a leader in hearing healthcare, needed to rebuild their global ecommerce platform for audiology clinics and hearing care professionals. The challenge was not only to improve the UX of complex order and account flows, but also to unify the visual language across multiple brands and markets.

Challenge

While the project’s core goal was to deliver a modernized, unified platform experience, it also required rethinking key user journeys to better support professionals in their day-to-day work:

  • The order process was overly complicated and prone to errors, often requiring customer support to resolve missing or incorrect items.

  • Client organizations needed more autonomy through self-service features — like user and account management — but with guardrails to ensure clarity and accountability.

  • The platform had to support everything from quick restocking to complex, multi-step custom orders, along with delivery tracking, notification preferences, and more.

  • Multi-brand support was essential, requiring reusable UI logic with tailored visual themes and product data.

  • Resources were tight — for much of the project, I was the sole designer working on a high-impact platform serving an international professional audience.

My Role

I was responsible for the full UX and UI design of the platform, working independently for majority of the project. My responsibilities included:

  • Reverse-engineering a design system from fragmented brand guidelines and an inconsistent legacy interface — a slow, detailed process that required auditing and rebuilding every reusable element for multiple brands.

  • Designing new platform features in parallel, including complex workflows such as user and order management, delivery setup, notification controls, and multi-brand support.

  • Creating a fully interactive prototype using real code to accurately simulate product behavior — this helped showcase key flows, test micro interactions and significantly improved collaboration with front-end engineers.

  • Collaborating in regular meetings with design teams working on Demant’s other digital products, to keep the experience consistent and share knowledge — even though I was the sole designer on this platform.

Outcome

The result was a fully defined, scalable design system along with a detailed prototype and all necessary UI assets. After nearly two years as the only designer on the project, I hired a UI designer to maintain the system and worked with an external agency that took over the evolving brand and feature updates.

The groundwork I laid enabled a consistent, maintainable experience across brands and markets — and helped prepare the platform for long-term growth and support.
